Coaching experience and background
Keegan Murphy began his skating career under the tutelage of his mother, Eileen Murphy. He established himself as a Canadian national medallist and international competitor for Canada through the Novice and Junior ranks, representing Canada internationally on the Junior Grand Prix Circuit for five years and winning the silver medal at the 2002 Canadian Championships in Junior Men.
In his 16 years of coaching, Keegan has produced provincial, national and international champions. While developing athletes from the grassroots, he has guided skaters to the ISU international level since 2011. His athletes have competed at ISU Championships representing Canada, the United States, Thailand, Australia, Estonia, Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong. He is most notably the coach of 2024 Canadian Men’s Champion Wesley Chiu.
Keegan’s athletes have competed at the ISU Senior Grand Prix, ISU Junior Grand Prix Circuit, ISU Junior World Championships, ISU Senior International Challenger Series, ISU Four Continents Championships and ISU World Championships. With previous experience as a technical specialist at the national level, Keegan combines technical coaching with this unique perspective.
Over the past decade, Keegan has been invited to participate in regional, sectional and national committees and working groups. He is a certified Provincial Coach Course Administrator and works with local clubs and developing skating nations to support the growth of the skating community.
As Director of Skating Programs for Connaught Skating Club in Richmond, BC, since 2009, Keegan has focused his leadership on building a strong skating development system. He was awarded BC/YK Section Competitive Coach of the Year in 2022 and 2023 and has helped build a Skate Canada organization of more than 1,200 members, spanning CanSkate, Junior Academy and international-level programs.
Fostering team-coaching environments, organizing seminars, directing ice shows and mentoring coaches have been key components of the continued success of figure-skating development in Richmond under Keegan’s guidance.
Life skills are at the heart of Keegan’s coaching philosophy. The experience, confidence and composure that athletes gain through on-ice training and performance opportunities can help them achieve even greater things after their competitive careers.
